the messy girl's guide to organization.

me writing this entry is like kate middleton writing a tell-all of her life as a repressed black woman.  it just doesn't make sense.  i'm about as organized as miss south carolina's infamous pageant response.

and that ain't organized.

the good thing about having a newly painted kitchen is the motivation to keep it clean.  and the fact that i had to empty most of the drawers in order to haul them up and down the stairs to the basement to paint them provided the perfect blank canvas to get my shazz together.  without further ado, here are the messy girl's tips to cleaning up her act.

step 1) purge.  you do not need 374 pens and pencils stashed in a kitchen drawer.  throw them away.  if your good little dutch girl guilt sets in and won't let you dump them in trash, donate them.  or take them to work, which is what i plan to do.  i swear to dog, give a high schooler a pencil and it will disappear within 30 seconds.

step 2) unify.  i picked up a few pieces of martha stewart home office supplies from staples and mixed in a few colorful bowls that were otherwise serving no purpose.

step 3) pick things that are pretty.  silver paperclips?  fuhgetaboutit.  brass, baby!

step 4) everything has a place.  it's your job to keep it in that place.  do as i say, not as i do.

step 5) labels. labels. labels.

step 6) keep things functional.  my organizers were sliding all over the place in the drawer, so i recycled  some old shelf gripper (real term?) to keep things from sliding.

trace each organizer.

cut the grippy stuff.

reposition the organizer on top of the grippy stuff.

voi-freaking-la.

step 7) utilize your surrounding space.  if you're anything like me, you plaster sticky notes all over the counter.  this obviously takes up space.  and it's tacky.  i invested in a removable label that i stuck to the fridge for note jotting purposes.

step 8) you've created a clean and organized space.  now USE it.  i'm still working on step 8.  i'll let you know how it goes.
