add this to the list of 'somedays.'

let me preface this entry with a 'happy friday.' you've worked hard. you deserve it.

yesterday my mom and i took gerty on a walk through holland's historic district. i must say, i love historic houses. when i grow up i'd like to buy one and fix it up. if my grades are good enough.

i did a little world wide webbing for those of you who are in the market now and came across some gems.

location: caro, michigan
built in: 1902
price: $234,400

look at that freakin' staircase. it's gorge, but i'm getting winded just looking at those steps.

location: coldwater, michigan
built in: 1886
price: $279,000

featuring a very dark entrance. and let's be real, it's probably haunted. but nothing a little face lift and ghost hunters couldn't fix.

for those of you who want to put some elbow grease into a historic house, this kitchen could use your greasy elbows.

location: coldwater, michigan
built in: 1886
price: $249,900

apparently in 1886 queen anne style houses were all the rage. and rightfully so. this baby is ornate. look at that gold guiling on the ceiling. times must have been good in 1886.

location: holland, michigan
built in: ??? a long time ago
price: $179,900

if you're a west michigander like me, this baby is right in your back yard. it needs some TLC, but still has a lot of the original features that make it quite charming. i'm guessing there are some pretty awesome wood floors under that nast red carpet.

location: mount carroll, illinois
built in: 1876
price: $189,900

this one is just plain charming.

location: indianapolis, indiana
built in: early 1900's
price: $44,900

i really like this one. it needs a lot of work, but it would be adorable when it's finished. at only $44,900, you could get a lot of bang for relatively little buck.

location: new albany, indiana
built in: 1870's
price: $49,900

aaaaaand my favorite. wrap around porch? check. lots of charm? check. big trees that provide lots of shade? check. and, again, this cutie is only about $50K, which would leave a lot of money to make updates and improvements.

so what's your architectural style? do you like houses that have history or do you prefer new and modern? my friend emily says that she wouldn't want a historic home because you could potentially be pooping an a one hundred year-old toilet.

i suppose i never thought of that.

  1. man I cannot get over the price differences! In Nashville 270,000 gets you SO much less house. Happy hunting :)

  4. So fun to look at!! Our house was actually built in 1891 :), unfortunately it's not as picturesque as these, but it is old and has some character :).
