good things come to those who wait.

or in my case, good things come to those who completely forget about something and then BAM, you realize you wanted that for a long time.

case in point.

one of my very first blog entries exposed my lust for ann perkins' afghan featured on parks and recreation. i begged and pleaded for a source, but you left me high and dry. in your defense, the only two readers i had back in the day were my parents. and goodness knows they didn't know where i could find that afghan. it turns out my parents have redeemed themselves. well, my mom has anyway. dad still needs some work. my mom was going through some of my grandma's belongings and found this:

huh? what is that? well, to be frank, i have no idea what it is. but i love it. from the looks of it, i'm guessing my grandma hand stitched it years ago. it's hundreds of vintage fabric circles that have been sewn together to create, well...something. but it's beautiful and feels like it walked right off the shelf of anthropologie.

(from this point on, the blog thinks all of the text is a hyperlink. why? your guess is as good as mine. one of these days i really need to figure out this whole blogging thing).

now, since i don't know exactly what this thing is, i don't know where to put it. it adds a punch of much needed color to my awful beige couch. that couch is as comfy as they come, but she uuugly.

it also makes a kick-arse table covering.

man, i am in love with this colorful, vintage, handmade beauty. now if only knew what to call it. does anyone out there have a keen eye for sewing? do you know what this might be? i'd really love to know.

and, ann perkins, you can take your afghan and shove it. mine is way cooler than yours.

  3. Sarah, it's called a yo-yo quilt. All individual circles that are gathered in the middle to form a "cap". Then all these "caps" are stitched together. Yours is not only beautiful, but priceless. Anything that is made by a grandma and appreciated the way you appreciate yours makes it even more special. Hope this helps, and you could certainly make one yourself. :) A DIY project for sure!

  4. I love it on the couch....and I cannot lie at first glance I wondered why your grandma had so many scrunchies:) I see now they are not scrunchies. I am sure Ann Perkins is jealous.

  6. I see many of these Yo-yo quilts in antique shops and they all seem to be between $150 - $300. Way out of my price range I really wish my Nana had made one of these beautiful things.
