they say that the sense of smell triggers memories. i agree (after all, who am i to argue with scientists?), but ordinary, inanimate objects also jog my memory of days gone by. this is probably why it took me FOREVER to clean my room as a kid. i'd come across a shoebox filled with old middle school notes that were passed in class and have to drop everything to read every letter. by the way, the contents of said letters are hilarious. or i'd find an old sheet of stick-on earrings that i would wear throughout my pre-pierced ears days and i'd have to sift through the memories that were attached to the earrings.
so imagine what kinds of memories i have whenever i go over to my parents house and use this:

that's right. those poor, innocent bears are doing what you think they're doing. you see, my parents have had this mug as long as i can remember. in fact, they also had one featuring hippos doing the same bendy things that the bears are doing. i vividly remember asking when i was young what the bears were doing. my parents said they were wrestling and i took their word for it.
then i grew up. thanks to the doodles on the notebook of the kid who sat next to me in 7th grade science class, i discovered that the bears are not wrestling. and then i got weirded out. to think that i spent so many frigid winter nights sipping hot chocolate from a porno mug is a little unsettling. and then i had to wonder why my parents would even own something like a porno bear mug. and then i had to stop wondering because i'm sure i wouldn't like the answer.
i'd love to know what little knickknacks you have lying around that are connected to weird or funny memories. hopefully they aren't as x-rated as mine. oh, and mom and dad (if you're reading this), you should probably stop using that mug when company comes.
I can only imagine what is in those letters from middle school! Yikes!
ReplyDeletesteph, they are seriously hilarious. many of them contain lyrics to songs we made up about people. ha!
ReplyDeletelaughed out loud again! :)
ReplyDeleteFound your blog from a comment you left on YHL. I have been reading it for the last 30 minutes and my co-workers keep coming over to see what I am laughing about. You are hilarious! This post about the porno mugs was when I had to stop. I had tears coming down my face from laugh-crying! My GRANDparents had a mug similar to that one! but it was cows! Too funny! You have been added to my daily blog hop list! Thanks!
ReplyDeletechrissi, thank you for your kind words. they mean a lot. it sounds like your grandparents and my parents would get along famously. thanks for reading!
